Aquarium advice? Any pointers any problems? Anything please just your opinion on the current setup.?

I currently have a aquarium equipped with heater, filter the one that clips on the back, light, canopy a few fake plants, and two caves.

1 rainbow shark
2 Marble Mollies
1 Black Mollie
1 fancy Guppy
1 Algae Eater

What do you guys think?
Ohh, will the black mollie and the marble breed.

Doug, your last input is correct. In order for anyone here to give you accurate advice, you really need to give the tank size. I mostly evaluate how things would work out based on the footprint, and filtration.

I would assume you got gyped by the pet store about that "algae" eater as well. Most people have come to believe that pleco’s are algae eaters, and while they can eat it, they are not true algae eaters. They are an armored catfish and bottom feeder. Also common pleco’s will reach in the 18 inches and upwards range as adults, and generate more waste then they are worth from my point of view.

If algae is a concern here, you will be better served to focus on the elements that make algae thrive and deprive it. Lighting is a big one, as is CO2, nitrates, and phosphates. Lighting is well within your sphere of control by limiting lighting to 8-10 hours a day max. Avoiding direct sunlight is a must. CO2, if you find in excess, increase your oxygen. Nitrates are controlled by regular water changes, and I’d just simply use a phosphate remover to your filter to control that.

If you need bottom feeders, look into cory catfish, loaches, botia’s and smaller non channel catfish. Again to suggest which, the tank size needs to be known. Outside of that, your population seems low, but if you are talking about a 20 gallon tank, then you’re pretty much at capacity.

For Bonnie, not to provoke anything, but UGF’s are pretty much outdated in my opinion. They certainly are not bacteria friendly, as the nitrifying bacteria is aerobic, and would exist where there is a steady supply of oxygen, and you will not find that in UGF’s. Natural filtration of a lake or river or stream consists of a steady inflow of refreshed new water, which is exactly what you get from HOB’s and cannisters, other then the water not being brand new. A tank is a closed enviroment thus leaving the keeper to be responsible for mineral replenishment via routine water changes.

    pretty good,it seems.

I’m a big believer in "undergravel" filters, since they’re biological and easy to maintain, otherwise it sounds good. You just stir the gravel then change 1/4 to 1/3 of the water weekly. More info./explanation on them:

    *Edit: Yes, they should breed.

You should get more mollies and guppies as they are schooling fish. I don’t see any bad overstocking. What kind of algae eater do you have? I am sure that any one would be fine with your tank. You should get four more guppies and 3 more Black Mollies.

It’s so much fun releasing a species into a tank where there is the same species (if they are a schooling fish) because they will school up immediatly. I did that with my Red Platys and Scissortail Rasboras.
If you want a really interesting fish, try angelfish. You can fit one in your current tank!
    Have fun!

i would say thats pretty good, but i dont know how big the tank is…so i can’t give you a definate answer.
but i would get another guppy or two (you should have 3 females to one male) so it isnt lonely. most fish do best in odd numbers greater than 3. and yes… the marble molly and the black ones can mate.

Can’t say because you don’t indicate how big the tank is.

OK how big is your tank, if 30gl or under you are overcrowding. Other than that, I have the same setup. Oh and my personal tip: If you have a 10g tank get a 15g or 20g filter (depending on the tank) just to be safe.
